It's classical Latin, whereas the Romance languages come from vulgar Latin. is a better Latin course if you want Latin for something useful. It takes days, and now without grammar, is basically useless if you are a beginner, or too short for someone with experience. Ironically, doing Latin was so frivolous that it made me more relaxed about trying languages, so I started German, my first serious non-romance language. The experience did make me grateful for how the vernacular romance languages simplified grammar over time! Other than an occasional flash of "so that's where that word came from!" light, I did not find Latin to give me insight into French or Spanish. Latin sentences focus on who sacrificed at the graves, what the drunken parrot said in the marketplace, and peacocks. And nouns fall into classes that have different but overlapping declensions (changes in ending according to their function in the sentence). So you're going along, expecting two genders, and there are THREE. The problem with the Latin course is that on the revision to the path, Duolingo took away all the tips. I'm not the only person who's done it in a 15-day-ish time range, as it's very short. Please, only add languages to this list if you have created the corresponding page and added at least one lesson. The full Latin course - not taking it to Legendary, and not doing the "ultimate challenge" at the end that's just review - took me 13 days. Here are the languages we have attempted to extract notes from so far.
